Current Annoyances
Forum rules
We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

It's funny, but we always laugh at US Bureacracy the same way and snigger a little after chortling 'Land Of The Free'.
I guess the moral of this story is that everything of state is a bureaucratic nonsense everywhere and doubly so if you are not of that state.
Remind me, was Jubboiter born in Germany?

It would have been cool if we had both been born there.

Darnit! Shame, because would she then have got dual citizenship automatically?

Re: Current Annoyances
No, sadly. German citizenship requires parental citizenship for automatic conferral. I don't have it because my parents are both US citizens, therefore Jubboiter also would not have it. I wish I had it.

Re: Current Annoyances
That's a bummer. My friends in Canada and my friends in Australia both have auto citizenship for their child because the kid was born "on premises".
The only complication is the Canadian side, because apparently if they then come back to the UK then the child must go back to Canada for a period of time (many months, can't remember now) before the 18th birthday to maintain it.

Jubbers could have been German. Her parents were at fault. Too much American pride.

The rules changed when Germany united, which was before I could make decisions about these things.

I remember watching the wall come down. I had just got home from Cubs. My dad made me sit on the sofa and said "watch this, it's going to be important!"

It might have been Scouts. One, I came home and watched the wall come down, the other, I got home just in time to see Germany score a really fluke goal against England in the World Cup.

No one else in my class--not a single damned kid--seemed to realize how big a deal it was or to care in the slightest that it was happening. Granted, they hadn't grown up in Germany like I had. But still!

I had grown up in the UK which the Russians referred to as "America's Aircraft Carrier" off Europe. Films like "Threads" and "When The Wind Blows" were a big deal at the time and the Russians were terrified of Thatcher as part of the Reagan double act. When it happened it was a big fucking deal here and I remember it clear as day.

I took 3 years of German in high school, and I remember my teacher tearing up about it. I don't recall if we were watching it in the classroom or it was the next day but she was pretty emotional.

Re: Current Annoyances
There's a possibility that someday we might have to move to Germany for my husband's job. (Please keep this info restricted to the lounge.) if we do, it will not be as easy as when we moved to the UK, since the Spousal Unit is a dual US-Canada citizen, which meant no work permit for him. And I don't speak any German, except to say "scheise."

Current Annoyance
The Baltimore situation has given my white, Alabamian Facebook brethren another chance to remind me how they feel about black people.

I did see that liquor stores have also been looted, 'cos rioting is thirsty work, right? I have definitely seen some white rioters though. Did your Alabamians notice that?

It's hard to tell. Most of them are being passive-aggressive about the whole thing and using equivocative language.

I would be outraged, if I knew what equivocative language was!

Re: Current Annoyances
I considered "equivocal language," but "equivocal" can hint at something like open-mindedness/considering things from more than one perspective. I also considered using "equivocation," but I usually reserve it for more focused discussions of logical fallacies. Also, it's a word I only like to use once a year on the boards. I still have a bit to go until the one-year anniversary of my last use of it.
